Why DO IT TO IT is a phrase you need to incorporate in your daily life
The phrase stuck with me after watching Leaving Las Vegas with Nicholas Cage, a gem of the 90s. Ben Sanderson (Nicholas Cage), a raging alcoholic exclaims “DO IT TO IT” as he takes a shot with a woman he tries to pick up at the bar. The invitation to his “apartment, ON THE BEACH” in where he explains he will “throw a movie in the VCR and mix up a gooey blender drink” doesn’t exactly spell a good time for this woman who can smell the copious amounts of alcohol on his breath. On her way out she tells him he shouldn’t drink so much and Ben responds “Maybe I shouldn’t breathe as much, HA HAA.” This whole interaction within the first five minutes of the film leads us into the dark, dark life of an alcoholic who plans to drink himself to death in the only place that one can do it and never be questioned…Las Vegas.
Cage won an Oscar for his role and rightfully so. It is classic zany Cage, whom either you love or hate, but it is also a very poignant look at alcoholism and the complete capitulation to addiction. Anyways, see the movie!
To get back to my point though, over the past few months “DO IT TO IT” has prefixed and followed many actions/thoughts in my mind. Mostly by way of invoking my own motivation — “Wake up and DO IT TO IT”, “Alright, time to write my first blog, DO IT TO IT”, and of course, “DO IT TO IT, take another shot of tequila.”
I’m constantly doing it to it and friends are catching on as well — “I can’t go out tonight, I have to stay home and DO IT TO IT” or “Let’s go out and DO IT TO IT.” The phrase is inherently motivational. Have a paper to write you just can’t seem to get started on? Afraid to ask someone out on a date? Giving yourself an at-home bikini wax? — Just think DO IT TO IT — you might just find it works for you too!
DO IT TO IT is the phrase of the year, or possibly a lifetime. It is especially useful now as I enter my late twenties. At this point in my life the hustle has never felt more real, but thanks to Nic Cage and his stellar performance, I’m ready to DO IT TO IT!
Hope you stick around.
